She awoke to find water everywhere. Puddles spread all over the lawn like a small swamp. She jumped to her feet and all the blood rushed to her head, making her dizzy and momentarily causing black spots to appear in front of her eyes. When she regained her balance, she rushed to the faucet and shut off the sprinkler. She positioned it on a section of lawn that was still dry and turned the water on again.
As she climbed back up the porch steps, she remembered the Night Shades. One had taken up the usual position down the street. This time she kept an eye on the water to make sure she didn’t drown the lawn.
When she was satisfied, she twisted off the spigot and rolled up the hose. She then used a water jug to water a few plants Grandpa had asked her to care for. Once she was done, she headed home.
As she rounded the house, she could tell the Night Shade down the street was observing her. She didn’t want to have another incident like the one earlier, and dashed for the gate.
Cindy opened the gate before she noticed the Night Shade in the center of the street. Its hands shot out from under its cloak and spat a slew of strange words. The spell lifted her off her feet and threw her backwards into the yard. She landed with a hard thud, which knocked the wind out of her. Dazed, she focused on the wide open gate. Larry, his friends, and the Night Shade stormed in.
Cindy jumped to her feet and raced towards Grandpa’s house. She fished the key out of her pocket as she scrambled up the steps. She didn’t know what else to do except get inside. As Larry reached the top of the porch, she hurried inside and slammed the door in his face.
“You can’t keep us out,” Larry called.
Cindy backed away from the door. Her heart pounded in her chest as she listened to Larry and his gang outside. At first, they only yelled insults as they paced around the porch, but then glass shattered and rocks thudded against the side of the house.
“We’s coming for youss, Cccindyssss,” the Night Shade hissed through a broken window.
She wondered where she should hide. They would be in the house any minute. She knew she couldn’t fight them all and she needed help. She decided what to do.
